Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Explore Effective Course Design and Build AI Skills at May's CDI

Are you designing or redesigning a course for autumn term? The Drake Institute’s signature Course Design Institute (CDI), now AI-infused, supports you to rethink your course design process with evidence-based strategies and purposeful consultation with generative AI tools.

During the CDI, you will

  • Apply the backward design process to plan your course.
  • Practice drafting learning goals, outcomes, assessments, teaching methods and a course structure.
  • Explore practical strategies for using AI as a thought partner during the course design process.

The CDI is also a pathway to completing the elective portion of the Teaching and Learning to Build AI Fluency teaching endorsement. The institute offers numerous opportunities for hands‑on experience with AI tools, including grounding prompts with research‑supported practices. You will also consider strategies for transparently communicating with students about AI use in your course, including defining guidelines for individual assignments. By the end of the CDI, you will have a clearer understanding of how AI can support the course design process, how to evaluate its output responsibly and how to set expectations for students' AI use.

What to Expect

The CDI is facilitated virtually in CarmenZoom over four afternoon sessions. Each session covers a different stage in the backward design process and provides ample time for reflection, rich discussion and independent work. Assigned pre-work for each day prepares you to contribute to discussions with colleagues and complete components of your own course design project. Guest speakers from the Drake Institute and our partner units across Ohio State will join CDI sessions to lend their expertise and share resources for Ohio State instructors and students.

Because content and activities build upon on the learning from prior sessions, CDI participants must attend all four days

The May offering of the CDI will run from 1 - 4:30 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, May 19
  • Friday, May 22
  • Tuesday, May 26
  • Friday, May 29
