The Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning is excited to announce the launch of a local, independent course run of the Inclusive STEM Teaching Project. This professional learning program is designed to advance the awareness, self-efficacy, and ability of STEM faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and staff to cultivate inclusive learning environments for their students.
The Ohio State project is a collaborative effort involving the College of Engineering (Undergraduate Engineering Student Services and the Community, Access, Retention, and Empowerment Office), faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Drake Institute.
About the Program
The Inclusive STEM Teaching Project, an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), aims to advance inclusive and effective teaching practices while creating community among instructors and teaching support staff in higher education. Despite its label as "STEM," the course is relevant for all disciplines and broader participation is encouraged.
The primary component of the program is a free edX Edge Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) with five modules. Participants review case studies, discuss topics of equity and inclusion across a variety of teaching contexts, and engage in deep reflection. The self-paced course will run from February 11 through March 25, 2025, with an estimated time commitment of 3-5 hours per week.
Local Learning Community
In addition to the free online course, Ohio State participants are invited to join an optional local Learning Community (LC). Virtual LC meetings will be facilitated by Ohio State faculty who are passionate about inclusive teaching and dedicated to instructor and student success in STEM. Meetings will be held from 9 - 10 a.m. every Tuesday from February 11 to March 25, 2025.
While participation in the LC is not required, program participants are highly encouraged to join and benefit from rich and engaging discussions with their colleagues. The community experience will foster reflection and discussion, encouraging participants to apply what they’ve learned to their own specific teaching and learning contexts.
