Many national and international organizations and peer-reviewed journal publications are dedicated to advancing evidence-based practices that support student learning. These resources are an excellent way to stay up-to-date on current trends in higher education, engage with the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER), and maintain your own toolkit of effective teaching methods.

Essays on Teaching Excellence: Towards the Best in the Academy

"Essays on Teaching Excellence are short and succinct scholarly essays that were published by the POD Network on an annual basis from 1989-2011. College Teaching

"College Teaching provides an interdisciplinary academic forum on issues in teaching and learning at the undergraduate or graduate level. The journal publishes three kinds of articles. Regular, full-length articles of up to 5,000 words reporting scholarship on teaching methods, educational technologies, classroom management, assessment and evaluation, and other instructional practices that have significance beyond a single discipline. Full-length articles also describe innovative courses and curricula, faculty development programs, and contemporary developments. Commentaries, up to 1,200 words, provide thoughtful reflections on teaching."

An Empirical Study Comparing Gamification and Social Networking on e-Learning (de-Marcos, et al., 2014)

"While social networking has already demonstrated its efficiency in e-learning, gamification, which is the use of game-thinking and playful design in non-game contexts, has only shown its potential as a motivational tool. Asking the Right Questions: Using Student-Written Exams as an Innovative Approach to Learning and Evaluation (Corrigan and Craciun, 2013)

Effective Teaching in an Age of Accountability: Mapping the Views of College Students and Instructors (Yoo, et al., 2013)

"The authors captured students' and instructors' views of teaching effectiveness at the postsecondary level in two ways: open-ended questions delivered online to 500 students and one-on-one interviews with 15 instructors. A grounded theory approach suggested that effective teaching involves good communication aimed at helping students understand course concepts, strategies that engage students in learning, and a close monitoring of whether students are understanding, what they termed metacognitive teaching."

Energizing Learning: The Instructional Power of Conflict (Johnson & Johnson, 2009)

"Although intellectual conflict may be an important instructional tool (because of its potential constructive outcomes), conflict is rarely structured in instructional situations (because of its potential destructive outcomes). Many educators may be apprehensive about instigating intellectual conflict among students because of the lack of operational procedures to guide them. Ideally, operational procedures should be based on social science theory that is validated by research. Constructive controversy is an instructional procedure that is designed to create intellectual conflict among students and that meets these criteria. The authors of this article summarize the theory underlying constructive controversy and review the results of their meta-analysis of the validating research. The positive outcomes indicate that intellectual conflict can have important and positive effects on student learning and well-being."

Mere Belonging: The Power of Social Connections (Walton, et al., 2012)

Student Perceptions of Classroom Engagement and Learning Using iPads (Diemer, et al., 2013)

"This paper reports on a multidisciplinary assessment of student perceptions of engagement and learning using iPads. Student reactions following single and multiple classroom activities using iPads were measured via a survey asking them to rate their learning and engagement using a 5-point Likert scale. Responses to the questions were grouped into thematic categories of Perceived Learning and Perceived Engagement. Students who reported a high level of engagement while using iPads reported a high level of learning as well."
