Foundations of Inclusive Teaching

Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning

Overview

The Foundations of Inclusive Teaching Endorsement has been curated by Drake Institute staff to equip educators with the knowledge and application skills necessary to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment. This endorsement emphasizes the importance of inclusive teaching strategies to enhance accessibility, transparency, student engagement, and sense of belonging. Participants will gain awareness of the diverse backgrounds, experiences, interests, and learning needs of their students, and develop the ability to self-reflect. Additionally, educators will learn about common challenges faced in the classroom, such as incivility and potentially offensive comments, and explore strategies to address these situations effectively.  Participants will become aware of the university resources available to support inclusive teaching, ensuring they are well-equipped to create an inclusive and engaging educational environment.

This endorsement is grounded in evidence-informed teaching strategies, ensuring that participants are equipped with effective practices to support students’ success.  Requirements for the endorsement will introduce participants to a variety of practices and frameworks, including Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT).
