The teaching and learning mission of the university is specified as a core goal of the institution, and the university seeks to be as highly regarded for world-class teaching and learning as it is for research. In order to pursue that goal, the Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning was conceived, vetted and approved by the university governance system with a unanimous vote from University Senate in April 2016.
The overall purpose of the institute is to integrate and enhance teaching and learning efforts at Ohio State, and to elevate such work to the institutional level. The institute both coordinates and leads current and new activities focused on improving the learning experience for our students and positions the university for national leadership in teaching and learning within a research university setting.
Digital Accessibility Support
Updated regulations under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) require that digital content shared and used across the university meet established web accessibility standards by April 24, 2026. Across the country, university instructors are familiarizing themselves with the new requirements and making the necessary changes to their course materials. The Drake Institute has been working alongside partners across campus to develop targeted trainings and resources to support you in this important work.
Navigating Conflict Toolkit
Classroom conflict is a normal and expected aspect of teaching and learning. When navigated thoughtfully, moments of tension and disagreement can lead to significant learning and growth. This toolkit provides related resources for Ohio State instructors, including essential information on university policies and resources for building effective learning environments that support civil discourse and freedom of expression.
