Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning
Overview
The Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) is a cross-institutional resource for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars who are interested in preparing for academic careers, implementing and advancing evidence-based teaching practices, and making undergraduate education more accessible for all learners. In addition to the events and courses offered directly by the broader CIRTL network, graduate students and postdocs at Ohio State can take advantage of two CIRTL learning communities offered by the Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning. Participation in either learning community makes participants eligible for a teaching endorsement.
The CIRTL Foundations of Pedagogy learning community is a starting place for graduate students and postdocs who are new to implementing evidence-based teaching practices and those interested in a broad exploration of the literature on teaching and learning. Topics include backward design, Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TiLT), active learning, Universal Design for Learning, and collecting and analyzing student feedback.
All graduate students and postdocs at Ohio State are welcome to join, including those without a current or past teaching appointment. Our Teaching as Research community may be a better fit for participants with extensive teaching experience and those who are already comfortable implementing most of the teaching and learning topics listed above. It is also a natural continuation for past participants in the Foundations of Pedagogy community.
Learning Outcomes
Goals for all CIRTL programming are established by the broader CIRTL network. Below, we share how the Foundations of Pedagogy Learning Community aligns with those broader goals.
| CIRTL Network Goal | As a result of participating in the CIRTL Foundations of Pedagogy learning community, participants will be able to… |
| Develop evidence-based teaching knowledge |
|
| Connect with community to enhance teaching |
|
| Cultivate teaching skills through reflective improvement |
|
| Prepare for an impactful career |
|
Program Requirements
Participants who attend at least 5 monthly learning community meetings and demonstrate consistent engagement in the accompanying online course are eligible to apply for the endorsement.
| Title | Delivery Method | Hours | Description |
| Scheduled monthly learning community meetings | Zoom | 5 - 7 | In the monthly learning community meetings, a facilitator leads community members through discussions and activities about that month’s teaching and learning topic. |
| Asynchronous Foundations of Pedagogy course | Online course via Carmen Canvas | 11 - 13 | In the online course, participants complete readings, videos, and short reflections or activities designed to help them prepare for and reflect on the monthly sessions. |
