Are you interested in learning more about key AI definitions? Would you like to understand what undergraduate students are learning in the GE Launch course about AI? There are multiple resources that the Drake Institute, GE Bookends, the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation and other university partners have made available to Ohio State instructors.

Get Started with Teaching and Learning to Build AI Fluency

Teaching and Learning to Build AI Fluency is a teaching endorsement from the Drake Institute that is designed to grow your understanding of AI, Ohio State’s AI Fluency initiative, and how you can support students’ AI fluency. The program includes a core component—either an asynchronous online course or two synchronous workshops—that covers foundational concepts and key definitions related to AI and AI fluency. Among the AI concepts and terms explained are artificial intelligence, generative artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, large language models, and AI inputs and outputs. Links to extensive glossaries of additional concepts and terms are provided.

The Office of Academic Affairs states that the AI Fluency initiative “will ensure that every Ohio State student, beginning with the class of 2029, will graduate being AI fluent—fluent in their field of study and in the application of AI in that field.”

The Teaching and Learning to Build AI Fluency endorsement defines AI fluency as the ability to understand, evaluate and use AI within academic and professional contexts, and to do so with ethical awareness and discipline-specific relevanceThrough the endorsement’s content and programming, you will learn how fluency goes beyond tool use to include critical, ethical and disciplinary engagement. You will also explore structured guidance on knowledge areas tied to the university’s fluency outcomes, sample assignments and considerations for addressing AI at the activity, assignment and course level.

Over 1,500 Ohio State educators are participating in the Teaching and Learning to Build AI Fluency endorsement program. Participants who teach or support instruction at Ohio State, and who complete the endorsement requirements, are eligible to earn an incentive. Learn how to get started on your endorsement journey by visiting our Teaching Endorsements page.

Explore the GE Launch AI Units

All incoming undergraduate students take the General Education (GE) Bookends, courses that help them understand, explore and reflect upon the opportunities available to them in their academic careers at Ohio State. In 2025, the Launch Seminar (General Education 1201) was updated, including the integration of content to support the university’s AI Fluency initiative. Modules were added to address the first three fluency outcomes with the intent to encourage students to explore AI concepts and opportunities, rather than to mandate AI use.

  • Explain foundational concepts such as artificial intelligence, large language models, machine learning
  • Explore the potential benefits and limitations of common AI applications in the context of a chosen field
  • Evaluate the types of inputs and outputs foundational to AI systems — including data, prompts, commands and emerging modalities — and explain how input form and quality influence output quality, performance and reliability

You can explore the Launch Seminar’s AI Learning Units to see what your students have already learned and discussed about AI. The GE Bookends team has made these modules available for viewing by the Ohio State community to promote transparency and clarity about how students engage with AI in the Launch course.

  • Unit 1  Understanding Generative AI and How It Works
  • Unit 2  Using AI Effectively and Ethically
  • Unit 3  AI and Scholarship: Evaluating, Citing, and Reflecting

Two additional Launch resources are also available to view—a list of approved AI tools and a glossary of terms used throughout the units.

Access these AI Units and resources at the link below. You will be prompted to complete a brief survey about your role at the university and purpose for viewing them.
