Designing Your Ohio State Online Course for Adult Learners

Ohio State Online

Overview

Designing a course as part of a program in Ohio State Online (OSO) brings its own unique design principles and needs to the forefront. To meet the criteria for this endorsement, you will complete a self-paced course, during which you will work through the backward design process to incorporate evidence-based practice and Universal Design principles to plan an effective, inclusive course that meets Ohio State Online's expectations for quality online learning.

Designing Your Ohio State Online Course for Adult Learners (DYOC) is an asynchronous experience that mimics an online 7-week course. You can expect to spend approximately 2-3 hours a week on each of the seven modules: exploring the instructional content of each page, reflecting on your own course through optional activities, completing the knowledge check in each module and building an optional course map that captures the major design elements for your course.

By completing the self-paced DYOC before or during the semester you work with your assigned OSO instructional designer (ID), you will be able to dive into the course design process quicker, focus your working time on creating more specific components of the course, and ultimately have a more completed online course by the end. Participants must also meet with the OSO ID and learning experience designer at least 6 times throughout the semester.

Please note: If you want to design a course for an on ground academic program or a stand-alone course that will not be offered through Ohio State Online, then visit Curriculum and Course Development to explore additional teaching endorsements for online course design.
