Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. Evidence-Based Course Design for Higher Education

Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning

Overview

Instructors who wish to design significant, effective, and assessable learning opportunities can benefit from ongoing practice and support with preparation through intensive training in student-centered course design. In this Course Design in Higher Education pathway, you will receive expert support in learning and applying the backward design process. This endorsement provides participants with the tools, time and support they need as they work to build or rebuild effective, student-centered courses.

The Evidence-Based Course Design for Higher Education Teaching Endorsement recognizes instructors who have pursued a structured way to (re)design a course of their choosing. Most university instructors have a great deal of experience with student-teacher interaction and many have received some preparation for that element of teaching. However, very few have any structured, formal preparation for designing significant, effective, and assessable learning opportunities. The Drake Institute's Course Design Institute (CDI) provides that preparation through an intensive four-part workshop in which instructors, with hands-on guidance from experts, focus on designing or redesigning a specific course. Regular reflection, feedback, and peer-interaction are built into the process, enabling participants to learn from and support each other. The CDI provides participants with the tools, time and support they need as they work to build or rebuild effective, student-centered courses.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Consider their context and evidence-informed strategies such as universal design for learning and transparency in learning and teaching for promoting an effective learning environment
  • Articulate and align course goals and learning outcomes for a given course.
  • Scaffold appropriate, effective and efficient assessment methods for their chosen learning outcomes.
  • Evaluate teaching methods, including active learning strategies, that will be most appropriate for the context, goals, and outcomes of their course.
  • Devise evaluation assessment methods to determine the success of their designed course.
  • Use AI as a thought partner in each step of the course design process.

Program Requirements

Completion of the Course Design Institute is required to fulfill the Evidence Based Course Design for Higher Education endorsement. Requirements include the following:

  • Visit our workshops and events page to register for and be accepted to participate in a CDI (potential participants may be added to a waitlist if there are a high number of registrants)
  • Attend all sessions of the CDI (4 sessions of 3.5 hours each)
  • Complete activities due before each session

While time is built into the CDI to start activities, participants report spending time (up to 2 hours) between sessions to complete the activities and make valuable progress on their course design projects.
