Are you, or do you know, a graduate student who is beginning a teaching appointment at Ohio State this fall? Save the week of August 17th for this year's Graduate Teaching Orientation (GTO), a foundational learning experience for graduate students in formal teaching roles.
Each August, roughly 400-600 Graduate Teaching Associates (GTAs) attend GTO to prepare for varied roles at Ohio State: leading instruction, running labs or studios, facilitating recitations and supporting instructors with grading. Past participants report that orientation helped them reduce their first-time teaching anxiety, build connections across the GTA community, and apply practical tools and teaching strategies to their new roles straightaway.
Program Details
The 2026 GTO will be delivered primarily online the week of August 17–21. Attendees will complete an asynchronous Carmen course that covers fundamentals of teaching and learning, prompts them to reflect on prior educational experiences, and guides them through planning their first day of teaching. Supplemental virtual workshops will address topics such as creating effective learning environments, facilitating discussion and developing presentation skills. On Wednesday, August 19th, participants will come together in-person for an active-learning workshop, a resource fair, opportunities for hands-on teaching practice and more.
