Description

Responding to instructor interest for an AI tool that supports teaching and learning within CarmenCanvas, the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation created the Carmen AI Assistant in autumn 2025. This autumn, the assistant was made available to all instructors. But what is the Carmen AI Assistant, and how can it help you and students with academic tasks? This workshop will help you better understand the tool, its benefits and limitations, and the ways it can support teaching and learning. Participants will gain an understanding of the tool's features and capabilities, explore examples of the tool, consider applications of the tool in their own courses, and reflect on the pedagogical and technological considerations for using the tool.

After this workshop participants will be able to:

  • describe the features and capabilities of the Carmen AI Assistant
  • identify potential applications of the assistant for teaching and learning
  • reflect on the tool's benefits, limitations, and suitability for one's own course
  • determine next steps for designing and implementing the assistant
