Inclusive Teaching in Clinical Settings

College of Medicine

Overview

This endorsement is one of two that can be earned as a result of completing the Advancing Your Clinical Teaching course.

The AYCT course is an asynchronous, self-paced course designed to advance clinical teaching skills. The course serves as a path to gain expertise in clinical teaching and provides educational best practices for all faculty in health science education regardless of area of clinical practice. A focus on interprofessional education allows the course to fully represent the entirety of the health care team including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, and public health. The purpose of this course is to firmly establish professional identity as a clinician educator. The Inclusive Teaching Endorsement includes Part 1 and Part 4 of this course.  It first explores the reasons behind why faculty choose to teach, defines inclusive teaching and the power of peer evaluation and assessment.  Secondly it explores the importance of establishing a foundation for optimal learning by first setting a positive, inclusive, learning environment where learners feel safe and valued with clear expectations while being challenged and supported with clear feedback.  Lastly, it establishes the value of mentoring and interprofessional education.  The endorsement focuses on how to create an environment that empowers learners through inclusion and engagement.
