Foundations of Effective Learning Environments

Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning

Overview

The Foundations of Effective Learning Environments Endorsement has been curated by Drake Institute staff to equip educators with the knowledge and application skills necessary to create an effective and supportive learning environment. This endorsement emphasizes the importance of teaching strategies to enhance motivation, student engagement, and sense of belonging. Participants will gain awareness of the experiences, interests, and learning needs of their students, and develop the ability teach with transparency and to self-reflect. Additionally, educators will learn about common challenges faced in the classroom, such as navigating conflict, and explore strategies to address these situations effectively.  Participants will become aware of the university resources available to cultivate effective learning environments.

This endorsement is grounded in evidence-informed teaching strategies, ensuring that participants are equipped with effective practices to support students’ success.  Requirements for the endorsement will introduce participants to a variety of practices and frameworks, including Universal Design for Learning (UDL), formative assessment, and Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT).

  • Reflect on their own approach to cultivating an effective learning environment.

Participation Requirements

  • Participants must complete one experience in each of the following categories: Awareness of Students' Interests and Needs; Civility/Classroom Conflict/Classroom Environment; Feedback/Reflection; Transparency; and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).  Options for experiences are listed in the "REQUIRED" table below.
