Colleges and universities tend to supply numerous resources and support systems to assist first-year students in acclimating to campus and succeeding academically. This is often not the case for second year students although many of them are still exploring who their friends are, what they should major in, and what they want to do career-wise once they graduate from college. The second year can still have many unanswered questions for students and may result in what has been termed "the sophomore slump." This workshop will help participants understand the characteristics of second year students, the challenges they face, and offer suggestions for teaching that can help second year students find their way.
After this workshop participants will be able to:
- describe the key characteristics and needs of the second-year student
- compare the cognitive and psychosocial milestones that often distinguish the second-year experience from the first year
- consider teaching strategies that support second year student learning
