Multiple choice questions (MCQ) are a staple of assessment in large enrollment courses. However, writing MCQs can be a difficult time-consuming process. During this interactive workshop, participants will learn the steps that are involved in writing effective multiple-choice questions including aligning questions with clearly written learning objectives and determining the level of learning examined by individual questions.  Participants will also learn more about item analysis, evaluating the effectiveness of MCQs and discuss opportunities for using them in educational research projects.

After attending the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • describe the components of a well written multiple-choice question
  • write effective multiple-choice questions
  • discuss examples of multiple-choice questions used in educational research projects
