Introduction to Assessment in Health Professions Education

Assessment in Health Professions Education (HPE) occurs in unique teaching and learning contexts and can leverage specific methods. Participants in this interactive session will be introduced to terminology and methods common to assessment in this field. This session is the first of a series of workshops in a new Drake Institute endorsement in assessment in health professions education.

After this workshop participants will be able to:

  • describe the Assessment in the Health Professions Endorsement including the goals, values, benefits, activities, and requirements
  • define common assessment terms used in HPE
  • articulate the value of the backward instructional design process for aligning assessments with learning goals and outcomes
  • locate resources (definitions, literature, assessment standards, etc.) associated with their own profession and teaching context
