Date

Description

Critical to effective instruction is a clear understanding of what students already know. In this workshop, Jane Hammons, Drake Institute Senior Affiliate and assistant professor, University Libraries, provides an overview of research findings on the impact of prior knowledge on student learning. She shares examples of different quick activities that participants can use to identify when students may need additional guidance, or where they have misconceptions that are interfering with their ability to learn new content. Participants should leave the session with practical strategies they can employ to gauge students’ prior learning.

After attending the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the ways in which prior knowledge can help or hinder student learning.
  • Use quick activities to assess students’ prior learning.
