No matter what you teach or what kind of assignments you give, rubrics are essential tools for ensuring fair and efficient grading. When designed and utilized well, rubrics can also directly contribute to student learning. Rubrics can make course assignments clearer to students, help them learn to identify high quality work, and encourage critical thinking and self-assessment. In this workshop, we will explore strategies for writing rubrics that students find clear and useful, as well as methods for sharing rubrics with our students inside and outside the learning management system.
After this workshop participants will be able to:
- define assignment criteria in a way that is clear and useful to students
- identify strategies to promote effective rubric use among students
- utilize the new rubrics tool in Carmen Canvas to effectively share rubrics with students
