In this workshop, participants will explore recent literature investigating factors that impact the effectiveness of active learning strategies. While active learning is clearly supported as a valuable instructional approach that has the potential to improve learning and reduce achievement gaps, evidence also suggests that both planning and implementation practices are key to the success of these techniques. During the workshop, participants will review their own experiences with, and approaches to, active learning and will learn techniques to further enhance their instruction to promote factors such as student sense of value, confidence, motivation, and more.
After this workshop participants will be able to:
- plan implementation of new, evidence-based active learning strategies
- foster student buy-in through infusion of explanation and facilitation strategies
- design active learning experiences that foster student motivation, confidence, and sense of belonging
