As a lecturer at Ohio State, Danielle Schoon is dedicated to elevating, supporting and promoting instructional excellence and enhancing the learning outcomes and experiences of Ohio State students through contributions to the Drake Institute. She is an advocate of active learning and community engagement. She was chosen for the UCAT Course Design Institute in the summer of 2017, where she learned methods such as backward design, creating and fulfilling effective learning objectives, and how to assess student progress. She also completed all three components of the UITL Teaching Support Program, including the IR Portfolio, and earned an endorsement in the Course Design Institute Pathway.

Over the years, she has been a member of many learning communities focused on lecturer support, active learning, and developing research in the field of the Science of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). She is particularly dedicated to intercultural pedagogy. She received a Professional Development Grant from UCAT in 2017 to support her work in this area, and that same year she led a UCAT Common Reading Group of faculty members on Intercultural Pedagogy. Other learning community involvement includes the Course Transformation Learning Community in Spring 2023; the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation (OTDI) Technology-Enhanced Teaching Community (Autumn 2022-Spring 2023); the Office of International Affairs Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Learning Community (AY 2021-2022); the Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning COIL Learning Community (Summer 2021); and the University Institute of Teaching and Learning (UITL) Science of Teaching and Learning Community (Spring 2020).

In addition to being named the OSU Department of Sociology Outstanding Lecturer Award in 2021, Danielle Schoon has also been awarded the following grants: 

2021-22 OSU Michael V. Drake Institute Inclusive Excellence in Teaching Fellow for the Institute’s Global Arts + Humanities Discovery Theme (GAHDT) grant project, Advancing IR-on-Demand: Facilitating Profession Learning of Evidence-Based Instruction to Support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Ohio State Teaching and Learning Contexts 

2022 Affordable Learning Exchange (ALX) Racial Justice Grant to add DEIJ components to my SOC3302 Technology and Global Society course

2021-22 Office of International Affairs (OIA) Global Teaching and Learning Grant, “Virtual Exchange in Istanbul, Turkey, a virtual Global Teaching and Learning project” to create a new COIL course in Istanbul.
