Assessment in Health Professions Education

Assessment in the Health Professions happens in unique learning contexts. In many cases learning takes place in a clinical setting that includes learners at multiple levels as well as patients. Frequently the assessors are health care providers who have not been trained in educational theories and practices. These health care providers require training in assessment that matches the unique practices found in their disciplines and learning environments. Individuals that complete the Assessment in the Health Professions Education endorsement will gain knowledge of the theories and practices underpinning assessment in the health professions and be able to create an assessment plan suitable for their teaching context.

Learning Outcomes
  • Discuss the fundamentals of assessments that are common to the health professions.
  • Describe a variety of summative and formative assessment methods for measuring the knowledge, skills, and abilities of health professions learners.
  • Describe the influence of assessment on the professional identity formation of HPE learners.
  • Find literature and accreditation standards for their own programs.
  • Design assessments of learning that are inclusive and evidence-based.
Participation Requirements

Participants will complete four required modules, as well as three out of six elective modules.  Additionally, there will be 2-3 hours of developing products related to at least one session, for example, creating or identifying a rubric used in their own teaching context, or a MCQ instrument to assess clinical reasoning.
