Students’ diverse prior experiences and knowledge can greatly enhance the learning that takes place in our classes. However, it can seem difficult to challenge inequalities in the classroom and build bridges between students’ identities and the course content. In this workshop, consultants from Writing Across the Curriculum will discuss inclusive teaching strategies you can apply to raise students’ critical consciousness and affirm the valuable resources diverse writers bring into the classroom. They will introduce approaches for sustaining domestic and international students’ cultural and linguistic backgrounds as writers and facilitate discussion on how to make writing assignments more directly relevant to and reflective of our students.

After this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Raise students’ critical consciousness.
  • Affirm the valuable resources diverse writers bring into the classroom.

This session counts toward the completion of the teaching endorsement listed below

  • Inclusive teaching
  • Teaching through Writing
