March 1, 2022 | 1:00pm to 2:30pm
CarmenZoom

This workshop is intended for early career and pre-tenured faculty, including those faculty composing teaching statements for fourth-year review and their OSU dossiers.* The session briefly reviews the key elements of successful statements and then convenes participants into small working groups to describe, “decode,” and analyze sample teaching statements. The session closes with 30-minute guided writing and small group consultation breakout sessions.

*Priority registration is available to individuals attending the February 2, 2021, “Documenting Teaching” workshop. A recording of the first session and all session materials will be distributed to registrants in advance of this second session. Although this session is open to the OSU community, it will focus on statements written as part of the promotion and tenure process at Ohio State.

Facilitators:
Kay Halasek, PhD, Director, Drake Institute
Melinda Rhodes-DiSalvo, PhD, Associate Director, Drake Institute

After this workshop, participants should be able to

  • Describe the key elements of a strong teaching statement
  • Identify those same elements by “decoding” and analyzing sample teaching statements
  • Assess the effectiveness of sample statements relative to their key elements
  • Translate their decoding and analysis into application as they draft their own teaching statements
