Dr. Boyd graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1977 with a BS in Physiology. He received a Ph.D in Molecular Biology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1986.

After working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, San Diego and the Salk Institute for 4 years, he moved to Ohio State in 1990. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neuroscience. Dr. Boyd has also been involved in undergraduate and graduate education for most of his career. He served on the Neuroscience Graduate Studies Program Graduate Studies Committee for many years and currently is on the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Programs Graduate Studies Committee (BSGP). Dr. Boyd also served for four years as the Associate Director of the  BSGP. He was involved in the development of the Neuroscience major at Ohio State and has taught a large undergraduate Neuroscience class for more than 14 years. He is also Graduate Studies Chair of the new Applied Master’s in Neuroscience at Ohio State.
