Jonathan has had a career rooted in teaching and helping others enhance their own skills in the classroom. Prior to OSU, Dr. Baker was an Assistant Professor at Columbus State Community College where he taught algebra, calculus, and statistics courses. He assumed roles as Statistics Lead Instructor and Learning Resource Center Coordinator. As Mathematics Department Chairperson, Dr. Baker then managed the largest department on campus for seven years, expanding online course offerings, overseeing a 50% increase in overall enrollments, and providing sustained professional development opportunities for over 150 mathematics instructors.
Dr. Baker then came to OSU in his current role, which allows him to work directly with students. He is a course coordinator for two general education statistics courses, and has served the department of Statistics as both Coordinator for Transfer Credit and the Math-Stat Learning Center. Dr. Baker enjoys his work within his department but also thrives in working with colleagues across campus. He has worked with ODEE in developing his department’s first online course, has led college-wide presentations on using the student engagement software, Top Hat, and is an Advocate in the University’s Advocates & Allies (for gender equity) program. He has also served as an instructor for ODI’s Young Scholars Summer Bridge Program, mentors students through the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation grant, and collaborates with Athletics via their PEAK program for student-athletes. Dr. Baker has worked closely with international students, is a graduate of the Drake Institute Course Design Institute, is the Advisor for the student organization, Disciples on Campus, and he maintains ties to his previous institution by participating in the Central-Ohio Compact and serving as an annual moderator for the We Are STEM event that expands high school students’ awareness of STEM courses & careers.
Dr. Baker, his wife and 3 daughters reside in Bexley. He is the Inaugural President of the Bexley Minority Parents Alliance and has served his church in numerous speaking, teaching, and service capacities. Dr. Baker’s personal activities, and his two-decades of teaching & management experiences make him a great addition to the Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning.
