Active Learning in Clinical Settings

College of Medicine

Overview

This endorsement is one of two that can be earned as a result of completing the Advancing Your Clinical Teaching course.

The AYCT course is an asynchronous, self-paced course designed to advance clinical teaching skills. The course serves as a path to gain expertise in clinical teaching and provides educational best practices for all faculty in health science education regardless of area of clinical practice. A focus on interprofessional education allows the course to fully represent the entirety of the health care team including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, and public health. The purpose of this course is to firmly establish professional identity as a clinician educator. The Active Learning Endorsement includes Part 2 and Part 3 of this course.  It first explores the reasons behind why faculty choose to teach and determines the individual skills each faculty can offer and how to best utilize them as an instructor. Secondly it explores the importance of active learning in building strong engagement and empowering learners.  Active and inclusive teaching strategies will enhance the learning environment allowing learners to feel safe and valued while being challenged and supported.  Lastly, it provides evidence-based active teaching best practices for many of the various learning environments that clinical teachers may encounter from the bedside to the classroom. The endorsement focuses on how to use active learning to enhance learning in multiple contexts.
