Course Design in Higher Education: Learning Design and Scholarship in Pharmacy

Would you like to (re)design a course or develop new media, partake in the college’s course CQI process, or formally develop a plan to evaluate and disseminate findings from your teaching efforts? In this endorsement, participants will partner one-on-one with IDs, Ed Techs, and/or Assessment Specialists with the goal of enhancing their teaching and learning efforts in the college of pharmacy. This endorsement provides participants the tools, time, and support they need to develop vibrant learning experiences through course design, CQI, or scholarship projects. 

Learning Outcomes

  • Create new learning experiences using evidence-based principles in course design, multimedia learning, and universal design. 

  • Develop authentic assessments by leveraging affordances of available college and university-supported educational technology tools. 

  • Implement improvements to courses through reflective participation in the college’s course continuous quality improvement process or through direct consultation with and OEIS team member. 

  • Measure impact of educational interventions through a project in the scholarship of teaching and learning. 

Participation Requirements

  • Participants must be affiliated with the College of Pharmacy. 

  • Participants must work with College of Pharmacy Office of Educational Innovation and Scholarship staff on a learning design project (e.g., course design or instructional media project), scholarship of teaching and learning project, or partake in the course continuous quality improvement process at the college. Participants can choose from one of these four core options to complete the endorsement. 

  • Participants may take any combination of professional development workshops as an elective option for this endorsement, but they are not required to do so.  

 

VERIFICATION OF PARTICIPATION

The final teaching endorsement application will require you to upload a completion of criteria email obtained from the College of Pharmacy Learning Design and Multimedia team.

Learning Design: Course Design Project
Synchronous 1:1 meetings + asynchronous work 35.0

Our unit offers course design projects (e.g., course refreshes, redesigns, or brand-new developments). During these projects, faculty work 1:1 with the college of pharmacy instructional design team to review learning outcomes, develop assessment plans, choose appropriate learning materials and strategies, and build courses in Carmen. 
Learning Design: Instructional Media Project
Synchronous and in-person 1:1 meetings + asynchronous work 20.0

Our unit offers many types of instructional media projects (interactive case studies, 360 degree learning environments, simulations). For these projects, faculty partner 1:1 with the college of pharmacy instructional design team to review learning outcomes and to develop instructional media to enhance them. In these collaborations, faculty partake in the pre-planning, production, and post-productive process. 
SoTL Project
Synchronous and in-person 1:1 meetings + asynchronous work

Our unit can provide assistance in the writing and securing of grants for teaching projects, assist in the development of submission of IRB protocols, and in the development of scholarship projects (e.g., conference proposals, journal articles, etc.). Faculty can work 1:1 with our team from ideation to completion on a scholarship project to highlight innovations in teaching.  
CQI Process
Synchronous meetings 1:1 + asynchronous work 10.0

The college of pharmacy has implemented a course continuous quality improvement process. To partake in this process, faculty teach their course, then complete a reflective course CQI survey. Once that is complete, an instructional designer reviews the results and scheduled a course CQI meeting with the faculty and relevant teaching team for 1 – 1.5 hours. During the CQI meeting, we discuss and reflect on how the last offering went and document accomplishments, challenges, and opportunities for improvement. The faculty then takes at least one opportunity for improvement to implement in the next offering of the course and reports back on how that process went. 
Professional Development Workshops
 In-person, Online Course 1.0

Our unit offers workshops on instructional design topics (e.g., online learning, intentional use of technology, applying Universal Design for Learning, developing assessments, inclusive design and digital accessibility, specific college of pharmacy ed tech tool training sessions). Faculty may elect to take these workshops, when available, to count towards this endorsement.
