The Drake Institute's asynchronous IR-On-Demand Short Course initiative is an effort to provide quality, accessible professional learning opportunities to all those involved in instruction at Ohio State. This effort brings together local, national and international experts to share knowledge and experience in implementing evidence-based instructional practices across a variety of topics. In this first IR-On-Demand short course, Dr. Benjamin Wiggins from the University of Washington will share information and insights about the use of active learning in large lecture settings.

Dr. Wiggins has extensive experience both practicing and researching active learning in large lectures, and will provide guidance on planning and implementing multiple research-based active learning strategies in a course. Participants in this short course will be fully prepared to implement and assess the impact/effectiveness of one or more evidence-based instructional strategies that involve actively engaging students in the learning process.

Participants can complete this course asynchronously and at their own pace, and there is no set deadline for completion. Participants should expect approximately 4 to 6 hours of work involved in each of the four steps of the course. Optional discussion board-based opportunities to engage with other participants will be available to share and receive peer feedback.

After this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Identify and address significant barriers to learning and other instructional problems or challenges.
  • Improve instruction through effective implementation of evidence-based instructional strategies.
  • Evaluate the impact and/or effectiveness of instructional practices that are employed.
