Information Literacy Virtual Workshop Series: Searching as Strategic Exploration

Hosted by:
University Libraries
October 21, 2020 | 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Have you noticed your students using the same search tools over and over, even if other tools might work better? Do they ever struggle to locate sources, even though you know there is plenty of information on the topic? There is evidence that novice learners tend to use the same limited number of search tools and search strategies, no matter the information need (Head & Eisenberg, 2009). To become successful researchers, it is important for students to develop an understanding of searching as a process of strategic exploration.

The final workshop in the University Libraries’ Information Literacy Workshop Series will take place on Wednesday, October 21, from noon-1:00 p.m.  The workshop will explore Searching as Strategic Exploration, one the core information literacy concepts identified by the Association of College and Research Libraries. In this workshop, you will consider student learning bottlenecks that may be related to this concept and will learn strategies for helping students expand the range of search tools and search strategies that they can use.

For questions, contact Jane Hammons. Not able to make the live workshop? A self-guided version is available here: https://go.osu.edu/searchingexplore

This is the last of six workshops offered by the University Libraries for Ohio State’s faculty and staff.  Each workshop covers one of the six core information literacy concepts from the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education (ACRL, 2015).
