I'm Teaching but is it Working? Basics of Assessing Instructional Design and Redesign

Assessing the effectiveness of teaching practices and course/instructional design should be an ongoing effort that leads to positive changes to a course. Whether it be creating a new course from scratch, improving a "stale" offering, work surrounding the new GE, or any other opportunity to think about instructional practice, planning for assessment of instruction can be any combination of daunting, exciting and confusing. As we plan, we think about our learning outcomes, activities, assignments, and exams. What we often don’t consider is how we will eventually know what worked and what didn’t. This workshop will suggest ways to generate data and student feedback to answer that question.

After this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Identify multiple forms of assessment of student learning to understand the impact and effectiveness of instructional practices.
  • Develop a plan for building assessments into a course.
